I had the pleasure of meeting Darrel Holnes in Washington DC for the 57th Presidential Inauguration back in January. I knew from the moment we shook hands that he was special; something about his aura told me that he creates great things. And after learning more about Darrel and saw his work make impact to the world, G.O.D. is presenting him the Broadway Icon of The Year Award.
Renowned writer-producer Darrel Alejandro Holnes has produced arts events and programs for the past decade both nationally and internationally, and holds degrees in creative writing from the University of Michigan and the University of Houston. He and his work have been featured in TIME Magazine, the Kennedy Center for the Arts Theater Festival, on the Best American Poetry blog, The Caribbean Writer, Callaloo, and elsewhere. He’s been a guest speaker at the United Nations, supported programming at the White House as a Presidential Inaugural Scholar, and contributed work to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Holnes founded EMERGING, a movement celebrating cutting-edge and innovative musical theater in New York City with a Broadway Composers Cabaret at The Lambs Club, and a Broadway Understudies & Swing(er)s cabaret, currently at Toshi’s Living Room in the Flatiron Hotel. And beyond the worlds of fine arts and theater, Holnes will debut projects in TV and Film set in 2014.
