Princess of Baroda Receives the Asia's Royal Woman of the Year at the 3rd G.O.D. Awards at the UN7/2/2015

About Princess Asharaje Gaekwad Princess Asharaje Gaekwad hails from the Legendary Rana family of Nepal who ruled Nepal for 104 years. Her Great Grandfather was HH Maharaja Chander Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana who was considered the most enlightened and benevolent Prime Minster of his time. The Princess’s grandfather was Commander General Singha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana who was a powerful Minister and Nepal’s Ambassador to England during the 2nd World War and Ambassador to India later on. Princess’s father, Right Honorable General Arjun Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana who is the only person in the world who was bestowed the title of a ‘General’ even before he was born, as he was the eldest grandson of the King. Princess Asharaje Gaekwad was born in the year 1947 in Kathmandu, Nepal and still remains a Nepalese citizen. The Princess did her schooling in the Convent of Jesus & Mary, Mussorie & Pune and studied for her graduation in Nepal. She passed IA from Padma Kanya College, Kathmandu and also studied for BA from the same college. Being brought up in a family where girls were not only educated but had to learn other skills like riding, shooting, boating, cooking, painting, music, architecture etc. so she is very well accomplished in all. The Princess married into the Royal family of Baroda in the year 1970 to Prince Sangramsinh Gaekwad, the son of HH Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad. He graduated from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and then did a stint in factory management with Jenson Nicholson, London. The Prince was the Chairman & Managing Director of the Baroda Rayon Corporation Ltd. Being a sportsman himself he is an ardent promoter of sports and has established the Maharaja Fatesinghrao Gaekwad Sports Foundation in the year 1993. The Prince & Princess have two children. Their son Prince Pratapsinh Gaekwad married Dr. Praggyashree Raje the daughter of the Ex-Commander-in-Chief Pyar Jung Thapa and Rani Kamaladevi of Nepal in the year 2006. Their daughter HH Maharani Priyadarshini Raje married HH Maharaja of Gwalior, Jyotiraditya Scindia who graduated from Harvard and Stanford Universities. He has held positions of the Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry as well as Minister for Power in the Govt. of India. The Princess Asharaje is keenly interested in Women’s Welfare and Sports and has been the President of Women’s Cricket in Baroda. She is currently the Executive Director of the Gaekwad Investments Corporation. Pvt Ltd. and is the Director of several companies like Shivalik Golf & Forest Resorts Ltd., Tapti Synthetics Pvt Ltd., Annapurna Texturisers Pvt. Ltd, Alaukik Trading & Investment Pvt. Ltd. She is the Chairperson of two companies in Nepal, i.e. Rara Pariyojna Pvt. Ltd. and Panchajanya Hydropower Pvt Ltd. For the past 10 years the Princess has been very actively involved in working for the Non-Resident Nepalese living in India and is the Chairperson of several such organizations. She is also actively involved in Charities for supporting and improving Sports & Children’s education. Princess is the Chairperson of the Gaekwad Arts Foundation which is engaged with helping upcoming artists. She is also the Chairperson & the Managing Trustee of the “Hope for Nepal Foundation” as well as the Chairperson of the “Princess Asharaje Gaekwad Educational Trust”.
